Building Permits

The City of Grovetown issues building permits for all construction projects located within the city limits.

Building permits are required for all new construction and for any repairs or reconstruction which alters a structure. Building permits are also required for other construction such as roofing, decks, sheds and storage buildings, signs, sprinkler systems and many other projects. Permits are not required for painting, driveways, drywall installation and repair, carpeting, etc.

A permit must be obtained for the following:

  • New Residential/Commercial Construction
  • Manufactured Homes(PRIOR to placement on property)
  • Additions
  • Roofing
  • Renovations/Repairs (structural/electrical/etc)
  • Swimming pools (above ground and in-ground)
  • Decks
  • Sheds/Storage buildings (any size)
  • Signs (any size)
  • Sprinkler systems (installation)
  • Siding & Gutters
  • Windows
  • Awnings & Carports
  • Demolition
  • Asbestos Abatement (must show EPD notification, etc.)
  • Retaining Walls (24” high & up—designed by engineer)
  • Fences over 6 feet high (designed by engineer)
  • Meter Resets (only when meter is pulled from base)
  • Service Changes (electrical/mechanical/etc)

Permits are not required for the following:

  • Sidewalks
  • Driveways
  • Painting
  • Wallpapering
  • Drywall installation/repair
  • Carpeting/tiling
  • Cabinets/countertops
  • Fences under 6 feet high
  • Retaining walls under 24” (2 feet) in height
